From Aleppo to Aizu: A Journey Across Continents
“I was born and raised in Aleppo, Syria. What I cherish most about my hometown is the generosity of its people—everyone treats each other like family. It’s a strong, warm community,” Salam says with a smile.
He moved to Germany in 2015 and is now pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the University of Düsseldorf, focusing on cybersecurity and software development. Ever since he was young, Salam was captivated by Japan’s technological innovation and unique culture. That fascination eventually turned into a dream—and now, reality.
“Aizu is beautiful,” he says. “It’s peaceful, filled with traditional charm, and offers a slower pace of life that lets you truly connect with the locals.” On weekends, Salam enjoys wandering the streets of Aizu, discovering hidden corners, scenic views, and new culinary delights. “Every walk feels like a mini adventure.”
Technology, Hobbies, and Lifelong Learning
Outside work and school, Salam keeps his curiosity alive by learning about emerging technologies. “AI is definitely the hottest topic right now. It’s evolving so fast—it’s exciting but also keeps you on your toes.” He also unwinds by gaming, socializing with friends, and solving puzzles. “I love problems that challenge my mind—figuring things out gives me a huge sense of satisfaction.”
Discovering Eyes, JAPAN
Salam learned about Eyes, JAPAN through a professor who once taught at the University of Aizu and had connections with the company’s leadership. Intrigued by its reputation and interdisciplinary approach, Salam eagerly applied.
Since joining, he’s been contributing primarily to frontend development and API integration. His most memorable experience so far? “Working on a medical AI video platform for Kobe University. It was complex and technical—but incredibly rewarding. I learned a lot and worked with some great minds.”
Inside Eyes, JAPAN: Culture and Collaboration
“We get great coffee—and that’s important!” Salam laughs. “But seriously, what I love most is the independence and trust within the team. You’re given responsibility, but also support when you need it, which creates a really empowering environment.”
The work culture at Eyes, JAPAN is flexible and encourages creativity. Salam appreciates how self-driven the atmosphere is, allowing him to explore his own solutions and approaches without being micromanaged. “That freedom pushes me to grow and think critically,” he explains.
He also prefers working from the office rather than remotely. “Being physically present helps build stronger connections and makes communication more fluid. It’s easier to collaborate and feel like part of the team.”
Challenges and Breakthroughs
Transitioning from university to the professional world came with challenges. “At school, I worked at my own pace. Here, I had to pick up speed and adapt to team dynamics. It’s been a great learning experience.” He is also developing a deeper interest in mobile app development and cybersecurity.
Cultural surprises? “I was deeply impressed by the mutual respect and trust in Japanese culture. It’s something truly special.”
On Japanese work culture: “There’s a strong focus on quality and tradition. The communication style is more indirect, which takes getting used to—but once you understand it, collaboration becomes seamless.”
Looking Forward
How does Salam manage his busy schedule of work, study, and personal life? “Planning is key. I give each activity a clear focus so I don’t burn out.”
He’s driven by the pace of the world around him. “Everything is evolving so quickly—I want to stay ahead, keep learning, and grow every day.”
His advice to others considering working in Japan: “Immerse yourself. Learn the language, engage with the culture—it will make your experience incredibly rich.”
And his ultimate goal? “To become a leading expert in cybersecurity and work on projects that truly make an impact.”
Thank you!
