Visit at Fukushima Hospital
martin
I went to the hospital in Fukushima some time ago.
There was a medical seminar for people of companies which produces or want to develop medical devices.
First, they talked about the hospital in general. They gave some wishes or hopes at the end of this first introductions.
These are very common e.g. cheaper devices or more self responsibility in maintenance and repair to lower the expenses. Many devices are shipped with service contracts from the manufacturer. One point is special for Japan. They want more medical devices made in Japan.
After this we were taken around the small maintenance area for old and small devices and the diagnostics places. In this place I realized that really many devices comes from abroad. Especially I saw some laboratory products from Germany. Some big imaging devices are from Siemens or Philips (the sector Philips Healthcare started with the acquisition of a German X-Ray device manufacturer).
I don’t know why they import such devices rather than developing on their own. I think the technical opportunities are available in engineered Japan. More competitors are good for the free enterprise economy.
