Any person involved in IT enough time can saw changes and improvements information carriers. I can even remember floppy disks and have some using experience. It was so far time ago, but before there was other types of information carriers that we can find in museum shelves. Noticeable example of information carrier’s history is optic disc. According to temp of IT evolution optic disks are old technology but you can find in any electronics shop. Despite to popularity of digital distribution optical disks are still in use. Some says future of information carriers is SSD. But there are some news from scientists of RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) and WIT (Wuhan Institute of Technology). They developed idea of optic disk that can store 10 Tb of data. Another important feature is long term storage period – up to 600 years. The name of this technology nano-optic memory for long term data.

If we check any articles about evolution of internet we will find paragraphs about volume of information that dramatically increase every years. For example IDC (International Data Corporation) provided research and claim that by 2025 year whole data volume will be 163 Zb. To estimate scale of changes there are plot placed below. By the way 1 Zb = 1 billion terabytes. I guess number not preside but dynamic is correct.
Changes will be not only in quantity but in quality as well. Development of IoT and other factor will has influence. But the most noticeable issue there is storing of information. “Big data” is not the only modern trend. “Long data” is following trend. And mentioned above optic disk technology are nice solution in terms of energy efficiency and lifetime. Developers promise up to 1000 times higher energy efficiency for data centers. Comparison provided relative to HDD that needs more energy for cooling. At the moment the only competitor is Blu-ray disk that has 1000 years lifetime. But volume limited by 100 Gb.
Technological idea of nano-optic memory for long term data is not trivial. But it is possible to organize mass-production (at least according to promises of developers). For short, it composite material, very similar to glass with gold nanorods inside.

This technology will able to appear in nearest feature. It worth to note that HDD still has wide application and it is still evolve. The same we can say about SSD. However, I think mentioned above disk technology at least will find its own application scope.
